I would recommend choosing a school that is close enough that you could actually attend a few games. I'm a huge fan of UCLA because I went there, but also because the team has unmatched history and is the most successful collegiate basketball program of all time.
pick a team you like and watch as many of there games as possible...then you will like some teams and hate other teams.
This is a great week to start. Go to most any sports site, print out a bracket, make a small wager with a friend or two, sit back and watch the Madness!! I guarantee you'll be a NCAA fan by the end of the weekend - it's the greatest show on Earth!

But I think that they have a great spot in history because a lot of great players and coaches have came from Kentucky, and you can't forget 7 titles and the reputation of being one of the toughest places to play in and the Fans! You can't argue with the dynasty that UCLA had. I truly respect the other dynasties, but UCLA was so dominant for years. 7 championships in a row, 11 total.

We all know the ACC perennially brings out tournament teams every year , but the Big East and Big 10 have become as strong , and some may argue , better than the ACC. And don't forget , the national champions come from the SEC , which may not be as tough in basketball as they are in football , but have a lot of good teams in LSU , Kentucky , Alabama , and Florida.

Everyone pays attention to March Madness and the Final Four. Everyone watches the bowl games and the BCS National Championship game. But I can't tell you the College World Series champion from any given year... and I actually like baseball!

If you have a career ending injury though you will still have millions of dollars to go back on. They just want to get paid for playing basketball and be famous. Playing in the NBA is a dream to every player so if they are good enough to get drafted in the first round they will go. I do wish they stayed longer incollegebut you can't stop them from going if they are good enough to play in the NBA.
Then you go back to school. If you were offered a job in your field after your sophmore year making 80k a year, I guarentee you'd jump on the opportunity. This is their career. This is what they will do for a living. Why wait when your industry is in demand of you?

You do know that even the best doctor's make only 100k a year coming out of college, that business school graduates average 22k a year out of college? Even European ball players make more than that.
Greed, plain and simple. They allow their minds to be controled by cash, instead of self worth, and think they will make so much in the NBA, when most dont even shine, or even get much playing time. I always thought it was best for them to finish and get their degrees, then enter the draft, and "see". After a couple of seasons, one will know if they have a chance in succeeding in the pros,a nd if not, at least they tried it, made some cash, but have an education and degree to further their initial career with. Lets face facts, only handfuls actually truly make it and last, especially those that shined incollegeand couldnt do much in NBA.
If they are doing what they love, then why shouldn't they pursue it further, while making much money from it. If an injury would happen, or if they feel that the career (IT IS A CAREER) wasn't for them any more, then they could always go back to school. Let's say you go tocollegeto be a surgeon. Players always have the opportunity to return tocollegein their later years to complete a degree and a few of the really smart ones do that. Many of them also give back to their schools financially and support their former colleges for the rest of their lives. As long as the market pays such spectacular money to leavecollegeearly I will not criticize players for taking the payday. I'll miss their skill in thecollegegame, but I can certainly understand the pressure to make sound financial choices for the themselves and their families.

These young men feel like they are risking a pro career by staying in college, because the what if scenario; What if I get injured (no career), What if I have a bad season or two after my freshman/Sophomore year, (draft order drops and make far less money, or fall out of the draft completely). So as you can see it is all driven by the dollar. The sad thing is that 40-50% of these guys only have a career between 1-3 year long and they get paid league minimum. Many of us who arecollegeGraduates with good jobs are making better pay than the players in that situation. Everyone wants to belive all NBA players make millions but that's not true. Players drafted late in the second round or who are undrafted free agents have are paid less than a well paidcollegegraduate. That is why many at echlelons above reality have pushed to try to get young players to stay in school (in case their career in sport fails). But as long as the lure of the dream is so strong young men will continue to drop out ofcollegeto play a game for money.
It depends on the player's priorities. If they want to make money then they go to the NBA to make money and to become a superstar. Some players, who I think are making the smart choice, stay incollegefor the four years and get their diploma. But when they enter the draft, they might be outpicked by a freshman who happens to be just as good as them.
They are not allowed to go to the NBA strait out of high school, so they go tocollegefor a year then they go.

Though I somewhat agree with you about the length of the shot clock incollegeb-ball, I don't think that the rules committee should shorten it to the 24 second time period which is of course the NBA length. That might be a bit too short, and would take away a strategy when a less skilled team is trying to slow down an offensive power. The disparity of skill between some teams is somewhat evened out by hanging onto the ball a little longer, and makes many an otherwise lopsided game at least a little more competitive. Maybe finding a length of time between the NCAA and NBA rules would be a viable alternative.

I don't see too much wrong with the way thecollegegame is played, really, but would like to see the rules that are already in place to be enforced more consistently - and that brings me to my two pet peeves - the lack of consistency regarding carrying the ball, and traveling.

It seems that somewhere along the line, many people forgot that basketball is a game of skill, and part of the game involves the use of pivot foots and SKILLFULLY dribbling the ball to advance it. If these things were taken care of, kids would actually concentrate on developing their skills fully, instead of simply doing the skill half-***ed (edited myself there!) :-) You get the point.

I would change the jump ball, tie up rule. I think the ball should go to the defender. For me there is nothing worse than seeing a kid work his butt off on defense tie up the ball from the guy on offense, but the offense keeps the ball. You see a lot more hustle for the ball incollegevs. the pros and it is a shame for a stupid possession arrow to decide things. Especially at the end of games. The consequence of changing this rule would be a lot more hustle in the players but also most likely more fouls. It is always tough for refs to make the call in these situations as it is and changing the rule would create more of these situations.

Yes but there is somthing u must know and thats u must puy 110% into basketball now. Take Candice Parker she knew she wanted to play ball so she was always out there working always. You must be the first one to practice and the last one out. These 8th graders are born with talent but they worked. I dont know how good u r but u NEED to want it more then everyone else. You must eat driknk and sleep basketball. All these letters are not going to come over night. Dont feel bad if nothing comes till 11th or 12th grade but thats when the scouts kick it into gear. Work hard, show you will do anything to play, work with your coaches and they will help you. Good luck.

Arizona is in danger of breaking that streak this year. theyre currently 16-10, 9-6 in Pac-10. I think they'll still make it, especially with an RPI rating around 20, but they wont be their typical 2 or 3 seed. i wouldnt be surprised to see them get a 10-11 seed if they make it.

I'd say Michael Beasley.

He leads the power 6 conferences (ACC, Big East, Big 10, Big 12, Pac 10 and SEC) in scoring so I don't know how anyone can argue against that.

He can drive on anybody, shoot from anywhere even with a hand in his face, can create his own shot whether it be in the offense or in an isolation, and he is a clutch scorer.

yes there are tryouts! Most schools only really recruit a few really good players. Others apply for a sports scholarship. But lots of other people play sports as well. you may not get to play every game etc... but so what! You'll have fun anyway!

Coach K, Denny Crum, Dean Smith, Bob Knight, John Wooden.

Coach K would battle Crum for 4th. The other 3 are all superior in certain areas, and would be tough to single out one. Smith was a brilliant innovater. Knight was excellent in preparation. Wooden had an unbeleivable run his last 15 years. If they all had the same players I'm guessing Knight would lead them to the better record, especially if he had 4-5 days in between each game.

However, even more distracting is SILENCE, followed by a loud noise (just ask Tiger Woods). So, why not get real quiet and then YELL when they shoot the ball? Obviously this would require some planning, such as passing around flyers with instructions, but shouldn't be that hard to pull off.

I think it would be hard to pull of, coordinating thousands of fans like that. You could maybe get a lot of them to do it at first, but once the game gets underway, things can get emotional quickly for the fans and they get pumped up, making that sort of thing impossible to maintain for long.

John Wooden of UCLA. Not just because of what a great coach he is but because of the great man he is. He continues this day - to mentor the UCLA coaches and to impart his wisdom to players and he is probably the most well respected coach in the game. Like the other people above me mentioned, it is against NCAA policy. NCAA sports are considered at the amatuer level. Leagues like the NBA are considered professional.

NCAA rules require athletes to be "amateurs" in the sport in which they are competing. Signing a contract with any professional (or semi-professional) team in their sport makes them ineligible. So a player who competed for the NBA, the ABA, or a foreign league would not be allowed to compete in NCAA basketball. In some circumstances, they could compete in other sports (e.g. professional sprinters playingcollegefootball), but there is always a problem with endorsement deals, etc., from the professional sport.

You might see a handful of weekend lines pop up Friday evenings. I wouldn't count on it, other than that.
You can't anymore. In years past, you could get the line at least a day ahead of time, but the books must have taken a hit last year because you can only get the current day's line. Players do often want to play for a different school, but in order to do so, they have to transfer to that school (and oftentimes they have to sit out a year and just attend classes before they are allowed to play for the new team).
